about
What would happen if someone combined the big dirty 90’s sound with a bit of Jungle sensibility, dusted it with a bit of asian underground and painted it 2020 sounding colours? That’s the question Somatic asked himself before embarking on the journey to create his upcoming single “Fighting Fear”.
With this electronica track, Somatic wanted to shed light on the importance of normalising the conversations about negative emotions and feelings (especially for men) and how the track speaks to the mental battle that he and a lot of people were experiencing throughout 2020.
This fight against your inner demons is something that he thinks is quite universal and for him it was important to try and encapsulate these feelings in art, as a form of release. The Kung Fu voice-over samples in the breakdown are a reference to the 90’s trope where artists such as Photek were watching lots of classic movies and dropping in fighting scene samples and ‘classic’ lines.
“The exploration for me was how the different sonic ideas and styles I had in mind would combine while trying to really keep it simple modern 2020/(21) sounding.” ____ Somatic
The album artwork is by Mumbai based Denver Fernandes
Coming from a dual heritage Indian-English background, Somatic (Somin Griffin-Dave) specialises in the sonic world as a sound artist, producer, DJ, sound engineer and tour manager. Inspired by the Devon landscapes he grew up in, his versatile practice includes creating electronic music that treads the line between club and home listening, audio for dance & film and audio-visual creation. Although his sound is routed in electronica and more traditional dance music genres like Jungle, Drum and Bass, IDM, Techno and Breakbeat, he draws on music from a wide pool such as Bossa, Afrobeat, Cumbia, modern western Classical, Jazz and his Indian heritage to create a big melting pot of sounds that informs in sonic identity.
